It was Christ's will that teaching, along with baptism, be the focus of our work in the world. We take seriously the need for biblical instruction by offering several different opportunities for people of all ages to learn God's Word. On Sunday mornings we offer Bible studies for children from nursery school through high school. Adult Bible class is offered at the same time in our fellowship hall. During the school year we offer midweek classes for children from third through eighth grade. In the summer, we hold vacation Bible school for children from nursery through eighth grade.

At every level our focus is on the teachings of God's Word. While other churches might use these times to watch movies or play games, we at St. John use our class time to be in the Word. Children in midweek classes are expected to memorize new verses every week and learn Luther's Small Catechism by heart. Our hope is that the Word of God we teach might become so ingrained in our people that they will face the challenges of every day life as Christians who draw from the Word and apply it rightly. We see instruction as more than a mental exercise. It is breathing in the will and Word of God so that we might breathe out that which is pleasing to our Heavenly Father.

Alongside Sunday morning opportunities we also have a book discussion group that meets every other week. This group buys and reads books of theological interest and then meets to discuss the chapters. It is a great opportunity to hear from other theologians and teachers. Over the last few years we have read books from C.S. Lewis, Dietrich Bohnhoffer, C.F.W. Walter, Edward Vieth and Bo Giertz. We have read fiction and non-fiction. These classes encourage those in attendance to grow in their understanding of Lutheran theology.
